  Welcome to Year 4

That means Welcome To Year 4 in ALIEN speak, yes Mrs Barber speaks Alien!

We've already BLASTED OFF into our Earth and Space topic. It's going to be an exciting journey into infinity and beyond (didn't someone else say that?).

Watch out for photographs of our Space City....once this snow has stopped and we can get back to school and build it !!!!

Would you like to explore SPACE ?   You would !!!    Good !!!!

Now decode this by changing the font:

Watch out for puzzles and pictures coming soon. Pick up points from Mrs Barber for reading this page.

A big WELL DONE to our astronauts Grace and Connor who   have volunteered to be sent off into Space on a mission to find new planets....Good luck to you both.

Here is a letter from Captain Barber to parents wishing to know what clever things our class are getting up to this term.

Dear ParentThe festive season is over and we now have a very busy half term ahead of us, a very exciting half-term. I must say that I am delighted to be back in the classroom and the children returned with a good deal of enthusiasm on the first day then the snow fell!

The following information is a brief outline of the work that we will be studying.

Literacy
We have already started our unit on Science Fiction Texts. We shall be reading and evaluating this genre then writing our own short passages and stories. Discussions and studies will focus on how authors develop imaginary worlds, how language is used to create atmosphere and the reaction of characters to the setting. In our written work the objective will be to show imagination through language using adverbs and conjunctions to establish cohesion within paragraphs.
Comprehension skills will be revised and joined up handwriting encouraged.
Our spelling tests are on  Mondays.

Numeracy
Each day we continue to start the session practising and developing mental arithmatic strategies. The topics during the main teaching activity will be :
Place value, decimals and fractions, understanding addition and subtraction, developing mental calculation strategies, real-life problems including time and money, shape and space, including reasoning about shapes.
Please keep up the good work with the Times-Tables, it is so important for your child to know these really well; quick recall in random order is the key to success.

Our main topic, which links most subjects in the curriculum taught this term, is Earth and Space. It is a fascinating topic and I’m sure the children are going to thoroughly enjoy it. We require more junk please for our Space City on our invented Planet. Children will first evaluate the needs of the alien inhabitants, plan, design then make the model. Geographical and environmental issues will be covered and activites such as self evaluation and peer assessment on finished work will follow.
Please ensure your child completes all homework tasks given by the date on the sheet, usually Wednesdays. Children who don’t do their homework usually blame their parents!

Indoor and outdoor kit is required for PE each Tuesday and swimming on Friday.

Again, if you have any concerns or feel your child is unhappy about anything, please let me know so that we can rectify matters, however small, as quickly as possible.

Thank you for your continued support

           Pam Barber
